Mark your calendars, Aug. 20 at 1 p.m.

Hello everyone, sorry for the long break between blog posts. I’ve been out of town twice in the past couple of weeks, but will now get back to giving you regular updates on news about poverty and the South Central Community Action Program.

Here’s a heads-up for an event next week — please mark your calendars to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. The event will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Monroe County United Ministries, 827 W. 14th Court, which was the first location of the Monroe County CAP Program, back when MCUM was called the Christian Center.

Our program will include remarks from SCCAP executive director Todd Lare and board member Lola Debro, who has been part of the local CAP program from its beginning. We will also have remarks from representative of other local programs created by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964, including Shirley Boardman from IU’s Work Study Program and Sherry Dick who oversees the MCCSC’s Adult Basic Education Program.

In addition, the event will include recognition of the Christian Center leaders who coordinated the community’s effort in early 1965 to create the Monroe County Community Action Program. Those include Christian Center board president Florence Nebergall, who still  lives in Bloomington, and Christian Center director Marvin Jones, who passed away this summer in his hometown of Lexington, Ky. Jones was also the first local CAP director.

Everyone is invited to attend this event. To help us plan our refreshments, we’d appreciate it if you would RSVP to me at doug@sccap.monroe.in.us or 339-3447, ext. 262.
